STAR MAZDA:

at Sebring International Raceway

The Goshen Motorsports Team arrived at the famous Sebring International Raceway on March 8 for the opening round of the Star Mazda Championship Series presented by Goodyear. Being their initial entry into the Series, there was great anticipation for the week ahead, but there was also some apprehension because of not having had prior testing at Sebring.

Throughout testing on Monday and Tuesday, driver Billy Goshen was able to significantly lower his lap times and narrowed the gap with the drivers who had tested at Sebring in January and February. The team made changes to the car and were looking forward to Wednesday’s practice, but one of the side pods came off ending practice for Billy after only one lap.

The team arrived at the track early on Thursday looking forward to practice and qualifying in the afternoon. The changes made on Wednesday proved to be correct as Billy recorded the 11th fastest time, only 3 tenths of a second out of 8th, putting Goshen in the fast group for qualifying. The afternoon proved to be very tense. Just prior to qualifying, the team learned Billy’s engine needed to be replaced. In spite of that handicap and a red flag shortened session, Billy Goshen was able to qualify the #82 car 15th out of the 27 car field with a faulty engine.

The team worked late into the night installing a new engine for the next afternoon’s race. The Goshen Motorsports team woke early Friday morning excited about the day ahead. The race went off at 2:50 P.M. EST with the new standing start format. Billy had an excellent start, and despite the early week problems, finished an acceptable top ten. There is no question that Billy and Goshen Motorsports will be competitive in the 2008 Star Mazda Championship season.

BILLY GOSHEN:

“I was very happy with the results of my first Star Mazda race. I was in the 15th position on the grid and got an excellent start. A car stalled several positions in front of me, but I was able to get around him and passed a few more cars going down the straightaway, so I came out of Turn 1 in eleventh. By Lap 4, I had moved into ninth and was closing the gap on the seventh and eighth place cars when I went into Turn 10 a little too hot and spun dropping me back to 16th. I have to thank my crew chief, Richie Hearn, my mechanic, Ed Garca, and my engineer, Andy Tagg for giving me an excellent handling car.

Because of their setup and the new engine, I was running times in the 2:01s, equivalent to the fast laps of the leaders, and was able to move back to 10th before the checkered came out. Since this is my rookie year, my goal is to finish in the top five for the championship, and finishing in the top ten in my first Star Mazda Championship race was a great start to the season. I am looking forward to the next race May 17th at Miller Raceway in Salt Lake, Utah.”
