The Goshen Motorsports Team arrived at the famous Sebring International Raceway on March 8 for the opening round of the Star Mazda Championship Series presented by Goodyear. Being their initial entry into the Series, there was great anticipation for the week ahead, but there was also some apprehension because of not having had prior testing at Sebring.
Throughout testing on Monday and Tuesday, driver Billy Goshen was able to significantly lower his lap times and narrowed the gap with the drivers who had tested at Sebring in January and February. The team made changes to the car and were looking forward to Wednesday’s practice, but one of the side pods came off ending practice for Billy after only one lap.
The team arrived at the track early on Thursday looking forward to practice and qualifying in the afternoon. The changes made on Wednesday proved to be correct as Billy recorded the 11th fastest time, only 3 tenths of a second out of 8th, putting Goshen in the fast group for qualifying. The afternoon proved to be very tense. Just prior to qualifying, the team learned Billy’s engine needed to be replaced. In spite of that handicap and a red flag shortened session, Billy Goshen was able to qualify the #82 car 15th out of the 27 car field with a faulty engine.
The team worked late into the night installing a new engine for the next afternoon’s race. The Goshen Motorsports team woke early Friday morning excited about the day ahead. The race went off at 2:50 P.M. EST with the new standing start format. Billy had an excellent start, and despite the early week problems, finished an acceptable top ten. There is no question that Billy and Goshen Motorsports will be competitive in the 2008 Star Mazda Championship season. |
